Culverwells, originally known as Court or Darke's Tenement in old records. The title deeds shown that the owner or tenant of the farm had certain rights on the common, these rights probably went back to feudal times. Culverwells belonged to the Palmers from 1678 to 1795. It then went into the ownership of the French family who farmed it until about 1865, after which it had more than one owner. Its fields have since been absorbed by neighbouring farms. The name is preserved in the picturesque cottage, the style and structure of which show that it is upwards of 200 years old, by the Lea road.
Ordnance Survey, 2013, MasterMap (Cartographic). SDV350786.
