Visited 27/6/1991. Evidence of the internal jetty and timber framed partition above it, is indicative that part of the building was at one stage open to the roof, presumably the core is of medieval origin (dating pre-1550). The core probably includes cruck frames, at least from the right hand end up to and including the jettying. The original form of the remainder of the building is unclear and this may have extended lengthways further towards the road. The roof structure has probably been renewed, if any original timbers remain with evidence of being smoke-blackened it may be possible to establish more accurately how the building was arranged here. See sketch plan showing medieval core area of building and photocopies of two illustrations showing jettying, taken from "Devon Building" edited by by Peter Beacham in parish file.

House sometimes known as "The Garage" about 20m south west of the church of St. Peter.
Probably 18th century core with 19th century alterations. Whitewashed stone rubble with some cob to the first floor. Slate roof. Formerly thatched. Stacks. The 18th century plan was probably single depth and 2-rooms wide. Short rear gabled projection. House appears to have been rebuilt to the rear and widened in the 19th century providing narrow service rooms to the rear. Lean-to. Two storeys. Casements are 20th century. First floor casements are late 19th century. Left gable end fireplace is blocked but could conceal earlier features. An attractive small vernacular house.

'House sometimes known as "The Garage" about 20m north west of the Church of St Peter' now listed as 'Bell Tower Cottage' and regraded from II to II*. The summary of importance in the new schedule states that 'Bell Tower Cottage, a two room cross passage former farmhouse dating from 1420 and 1540, is of special architectural interest on account of its rare varient plan form, including undershot passage arrangement, the range and quality of its structural carpentry (notably the roof structure and upper floor carpentry) and its remarkable degree of completeness, which allows the origin and development of the building to be read with such confidence. Medieval two room and cross passage houses are rare nationally and most so far identified are listed , some of them at higher grades. The rare plan form, the quality of structural carpentry and degree of completeness at Bell Tower Cottage give the cottage more than special interest and it should therefore be regraded to reflect this'. See letter in parish file for full new listing description.
