Name:Clay pit near Butterdon Hill, Ugborough

Summary

Whole area between rivers Erme and Avon shows sporadic deposits of clay; this southern most bed, discovered around the turn of the century, lies a little north and east of Black Pool between the summits of Western beacon and Butterdon Hill. Pits sunk to a depth of 1.5 metres. Clay of strong potting quality but not suitable for bleaching purposes. Ground today reveals only a shallow circular depression about 9 metres in diameter in fairly level ground just south of the granite clitter on the slope of Butterdon Hill.

Clay pit near Butterdon Hill.
