Full description

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance Survey 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

Arlington Mill (Corn) marked. The mill was fed from a long leat which appears to have had two sources.

National Trust, 1984, Arlington Court, Devon (Report - Survey). SDV337709.

Arlington Mill is referred to in the parish records of 1571. There are various documentary references to mills, which may relate to this one or describe other mills in the area. The field names, however, indicate only one mill at Arlington.

National Trust, 1985-1988, Arlington Estate: Historic Building Records, A1/H24 (Un-published). SDV354537.

The barn with the water wheel has been demolished. However, the leat that fed it, several outbuildings and the mill house remain. The present mill house though has no features earlier than the mid 19th century. The Arlington Tithe Map of 1844 shows a different plan to that of the 1889 Ordnance Survey map, which agrees with the present plan, suggesting that the mill house was rebuilt, either completely or partially in the mid 19th century.
A mill has been recorded here since 1416.

North Devon Archaeological Society, 1989, North Devon Watermills, 6, 53 (Monograph). SDV337776.

There are a number of early documents referring to a mill at Arlington. A mill is referred to in 1416, a grist mill in 1571 and a fulling or tucking mill in 1581.
There is a possible mill house, but no machinery or water wheel.

University of the Third Age, 1995, Watermills in North Devon 1994, 5 (Monograph). SDV74915.

The mill was dismantled by the National Trust as an economic solution as the roof needed repair. Presumably the waterwheel was overshot with a leat coming in from the east side at the level of the present access road. The building presumed to be the mill house now adjoins the new house at right angles to it. Two millstones remain as door steps. The leat is filled in.

The earliest record of a mill at Arlington is in 1416. In 1581 reference is made to a tucking or fulling mill situated near the grist mill, implying that there were two watermills at this time. According to the document, the grist mill was to have priority over the water supply.

Bodman, M., 2016, Water Mills and other Water-powered Sites in Devon. Revised edition, 364 (Report - non-specific). SDV359634.

James Camp is recorded as the miller at Arlington in Kelly's Directorey for 1902. The mill is recorded in Watermills in North Devon as being dismantled by the National Trust as an economic solution, the roof needing repair.

Ordnance Survey, 2019, MasterMap 2019 (Cartographic). SDV362729.

The building which is presumed to have been the mill is no longer extant. The leat has also gone.
