Full description

Unknown, 1978?, Parish checklist? (Unattributed Sites and Monuments Register Entry). SDV161993.

Pennaton Copse, old tin workings. Situated some distance upstream from Pennaton Bridge on the right bank of the Glaze Brook. At least one small pit with a few waste heaps nearby. Whole area now a copse, and in 1975 a local resident 'dated' one tree as 160 years old. Possibly a late attempt to find tin in this area.

Smith, N., 1991, Survey Report of Sites and Monuments on Ugborough Moor and within woodlands at Owley, Peek Moor Gate and Pennaton Bridge, 14-15, plan (Report - Survey). SDV360448.

Pennaton Copse. Tin working within the wood clearly obvious, with a number of artificial banks, mounds and pits along this stretch of the Glazebrook; indicators of considerable streamworking activity at the site. Heaps of rubble and waste are dotted along the edges of the river bank and along the sides of a clearly visible (now dry) artificial channel, running parallel to the Glazebrook and lying approximately 15 metres south-west of it at the northern corner of Pennaton Copse, and angling obliquely to join the river around 50 metres downstream. Settling pit noted further south-east.
