Gover, J. E. B. + Mawer, A. + Stenton, F. M., 1931, The Place-Names of Devon: Part One, 77 (Monograph). SDV1312.

Brownsham appears as 'Bronsham' in the parish registers of 1564. A document of 1566 spells the name as 'Brownesham' and the parish registers of 1568 call it 'Brownson'. It means Brun's Hamm.
