'Stapleton' was mentioned as 'Stapledon' in 1197, but was 'Stapleton' by 1604.

Building shown but not marked at the same situation, but a new site some distance away at NGR SS55824385 now marked 'Stapleton', on OS 6" (1963) map.

'Stapleton' was leased to William Hole in 1781 but had been combined with 'Hempster Farm' by 1802. In 1881 it was called 'Stapleton Cottage' and a 1946 aerial photograp shows a roofless ruin. Exeter Archaeology found a roofed barn on the site in 2002. Other details: Fig 5, Site 55.
