Name:Gratnar Tin Mill, North Bovey

Summary

A tinners mill upstream from Bowden Mill, on the right bank, near a farm (known earlier as Gratnar). The leat began near Barramoor Bridge. Mill was in existence before 1750. Two sherds of 18th century South Somerset ware found at Gratnar tinmill, later donated to Plymouth museum.

Full description

Greeves, T. A. P., 1987, Letter in SMR, SX78SW/25 (Correspondence). SDV283249.

(24/07/1987) SX 7201 8362 Tin Mill at Gratnar (on private land) was discovered by B. Le Messurier in 1983. Visited by Greeves (16/03/1983); The mill structure survives, but half (lengthwise) has been obliterated by large boulders - field clearance. Internal dimensions measure 4.6m by 9.7m. Two broken mortar stones noted. Enclosure attached to south-west side of mill. One slotted door jamb in-situ on west of entrance, another lies to the north, and another lies on the east side of a channel north of the mill.
