Full description

Department of Environment, 1986, Tedburn St. Mary, 80 (List of Blds of Arch or Historic Interest). SDV285655.

Great Hackworthy Farmhouse. Early 17th century or earlier origins, partial rebuilding of the circa early 19th century. Whitewashed rendered cob; slate roofs gabled at ends left end stack and axial stack to main range, gable end stack to rear wing. Rear courtyard plan. Main range of house is a three room and through passage plan. The kitchen wing adjoining the inner room forms an L-plan. Two sides of the rear courtyard consists of outbuildings, including a granary.
Asymmetrical 5-window front. Gabled porch carried on timber posts. Some sash windows. Casements.
The kitchen wing contains a timber mullioned window of the early 17th century on the ground floor. Hall fireplace may conceal earlier features. Cream oven concealed beneath stair. A second 19th century stair has been inserted in the through passage. There is a 17th century door with strap hinges and small cupboard in the thickness of the wall with butterfly hinges.
