Summary

According to the land owner, a chapel once stood about 300 metres to the east of Challonsleigh Farm; the field immediately west is named as Chapel Park on the 19th century Tithe Apportionment. A site visit in 1987 found no evidence on the ground nor was any evidence for a building recorded during a geophysical survey in 2017.

Full description

Site visit 4th December 1987. According to the landowner, there was a chapel about 300 metres east of Challonsleigh Farm. Nothing, however, was visible on the ground at this location. The field immediately west is challed Chapel Park.

No evidence for a chapel was found during a geophysical survey carried out on land to the east of Challonsleigh. Figure 4 shows an area of ferrous/magnetic disturbance close to this grid reference. Such responses are characteristic of small pieces of ferrous debris, or tile, brick or igneous rocks in the topsoil and are generally assigned a modern origin. The site also coincides with a former field boundary recorded as a linear anomaly.
