Full description

Ancient Monuments, Schedule note (Schedule Document). SDV215572.

(Undated) Round barrow on Nattor Down. Moorland. Diameter measures c.9.0m, height 0.6m.

Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division, 1950/1979, SX58SW18 (Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division Card). SDV215573.

(18/07/1950) Two cairns discovered during field investigation.
(15/08/1979) A: A turf-covered cairn measuring 8.3m northeast/southwest and 6.1m northwest/southeast and 0.6m high. It incorporates some large stones, e.g. one 1.0m by 0.7m by 0.3m, is one side but none that might represent a cist. For some 60.0m around the cairn the ground has been cleared of stone, so it could be a clearance heap, but these are not common on Dartmoor, so the possibility is unlikely.
B: A turf-covered cairn measuring 4.2m by 4.9m and 0.5m high, with a slight hollow in the top.
Surveyed at 1:10 000 on MSD.

Grinsell, L. V., 1978, Dartmoor Barrows, 159 (Article in Serial). SDV273224.

(14/09/1975) Cairn on Nattor Down, 6.4m diameter, 0.6m height.

Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England, 1985, Aerial Photograph Project (Dartmoor) - Dartmoor Pre-NMP (Cartographic). SDV319854.

Not visible on Royal Air Force verticals.

Gerrard, S., 1990-2002, Monument Protection Programme. Archaeological Item Dataset., MPP 130622 (Report - Survey). SDV277946.

(1993) Round cairn mound measures 9.5m north-west by south-east by 6m north-east by south-west and stands up to 0.9m high. This cairn has seen limited damage as a result of a post-Medieval leat being cut through the eastern part of the mound. The area surrounding the mound has been cleared of stone and it is therefore possible that this mound represents a clearance cairn. The Ordnance Survey disregard the clearance hypothesis on the grounds that clearance cairns are not common on Dartmoor. This argument is no longer sufficient to justify the identification of this mound as a funerary cairn.
