Full description

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

Milestone marked, M.S.Barnstaple.3.

Jenkinson, T., 2018, Barnstaple to Ilfracombe A361 and Old Road (Report - Survey). SDV338891.

Site visits 1st March 2008 and 23rd March 2018. Milestone set back from the road in the bank on the north side of the road, about 50m downhill from the entrance to Higher Mainstone Farm. Inscribed '3/BARUM', from the Medieval Latin for Barnstaple, with a benchmark below. In good condition, although at risk of being overgrown by vegetation.
Set up just prior to the closure of the Turnpike Trust in 1879.
