Summary

Milestone on the old Barnstaple to Braunton Road which was set up circa 1879. It was badly damaged in 2011 and only a stump remains. The top part with the legend '2 BARUM' from the Medieval Latin name for Barnstaple is missing.

A milestone is marked as 'M.S Barnstaple 2' on the First Edition Ordnance Survey 25 inch map.

Site visits 16th December 2001, 1st March 2008 and 23rd March 2018. A milestone located on the old Barnstaple to Braunton Road, near Upcott, on the north side of the road, leaning on its side in a bank. Its legend, '2/BARUM', is from the medieval latin for Barnstaple.
The milestone was first located in 2008 when it was found to be leaning on its side. It was badly damaged by verge cutting machinery in 2011. A stump was found remaining in 2018, missing the upper part with the inscription.
The stone was set up just prior to the closure of the Turnpike Trust in 1879.
