The quay was bult by the Taw Vale Railway and Dock Company. The company received its Act of Parliament in 1838. However, the line to Barnstaple was not actually constructed until 1848 and was a horse-drawn line until the Taw Valley Railway opened from Crediton and Exeter in 1854. The quay, therefore, was probably built between 1845 and 1848.
It became important for the export of clay after 1880 when the narrow guage line from Marland to Torrington opened and clay was transferred to the quay from Torrington. The amount of clay traffic increased in 1925 following the conversion of the Marland line to standard guage.
The need to replace the cranes at the quay led to its closure in 1969.
