Name:ARTEFACT SCATTER in the Parish of Stockland

Summary

The aller farm site, like the crandons cross site, lies on the valley floor just above the 80m contour line. It covers an area of roughly 20 x 15m along the southern edge of a hollow which leads to a stream. Mrs pearce has noted a substantial peat deposit along the bottom of this hollow. Virtually all the artefacts recovered, 7835 pieces, have come from this area next to the hollow. Some pieces have come from a slightly wider area have been included in the present analysis. HATTON + CASELDINE, Untitled Source (Migrated Record). SDV132973.

Pollen + c14 sampling of the peat deposit provided evidence for continuous land use during first millennium ad, and possibly as late as the norman period (hatton + caseldine).

This site was discovered when the hedges around field tm 331 were removed. No further fieldwalking has been undertaken since 1985.
