Full description

Department of Environment, 1988, Drewsteignton, 57 (List of Blds of Arch or Historic Interest). SDV336831.

West Fursham Farmhouse including garden walls adjoining to south-east. Mid 16th century with major later 16th century and 17th century improvements, south-west end rebuilt after collapse circa 1930, modernised circa 1970. Plastered cob on stone rubble footings; stone rubble stacks (one rebuilt in brick circa 1930) topped with 20th century brick; thatch roof; slate to outshots.
A 3 room and through passage plan house built across the hillslope facing se. Irregular 3 window front of 20th century casements the oldest with glazing bars and latest (including those on left end) with leaded glass. Good interior in the passage, on the back of the probably late 16th century hall fireplace, there is an unusual timber joist ledge supported on oak corbels. The original full height crosswall is exposed only in the roofspace.
A strip of garden across the front of the farmhouse forms a terrace which is revetted and bounded by a 19th century low stone rubble wall. Multi-phase Devon farmhouse. Late medieval roof intact. Evidence of smoke-blackening. There are later features of high quality craftsmanship particularly the mid 17th century hall ceiling. Other features are probably hidden by later plaster.
See DoE list for full details.
