Full description
Ordnance Survey, 1855-1895, First Edition 1:500 Town Map (Cartographic). SDV338879.
St. John's Church recorded on the 1855-1895 1:500 town map, with seats for 350.

A new church, built on land belonging to the former chapel of St. Lawrence, was consecrated in 1829. This new church was described in 1883 as a 'barn-like structure', a plain square building in a bad state of repair by this time. It was restored with the help of G.L. Abbot, who had offered to be honorary architect. Only three of the old walls survived the alteration. The chancel was extended by 8 feet and all the fittings were designed by Abbot.
