Summary

Milestone now mostly buried in the bank on the north side of the road, 30 miles from Exeter and 4 miles from Torrington. The stone was set up c.1835 when a new road towards Exeter was built by the Great Torrington Turnpike Trust.

Full description

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance Survey 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

Milestone marked as 4 miles to Torrington and 30 to Exeter.

English Heritage, 2011, National Heritage List for England (National Heritage List for England). SDV347072.

Milestone approximately 5 metres to west of Neno's House. Early to mid 19th century. Granite. Triangular section with 2 round-headed faces to front. Inscriptions illegible at the time of survey (December 1987), but probably formerly read: '30/Miles/Exeter' and '4/Miles/Torrington'. Included as one of series along the B3220.

Site visit 2nd February 2012. Milestone 5m to the west of Neno's House, in the retaining bank of the yard on the north side of the road. It is mostly buried in the bank with just the top showing and so is at risk from grass cutting.
Set up c.1835 when a new road to Exeter was built by the Great Torrington Turnpike Trust as far as Morchard Road, where it joined the Exeter to Barnstaple Turnpike (A377). The milestone is Grade II listed.
