Gravel pits of between post-medieval to 19th century date are visible as a series of earthwork pits on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016, within Conigar Plantation. The irregular and sub oval shaped earthworks occupy an area of approximately 0.28 hectares of moderate to steep southeast facing slope, within an area where extensive extractive workings have been recorded during this survey. The earthworks are partly defined and labelled as ‘Gravel pits’ on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map. The earthworks were not clearly visible on aerial photographs or other digital images owing to tree cover of the plantation.
