Full description

Department of Environment, 1978, Totnes, 64 (List of Blds of Arch or Historic Interest). SDV342722.

Dated 16/03/1978. Numbers 4 and 6 High Street (south side). Late 18th century or early 19th century refronting of earlier building. Formerly one house; it was the church house before 1442. 3 storeys and dormers. Fenestration 1:2. Welsh slate mansard roof with rendered and red brick stacks. Stucco with rusticated ground floor. Plain band at first floor level. Plinth. Cornice and blocking course. Recessed, architraved sash windows with glazing bars and first floor cornices. Dormers with arched heads and gothic tracery. Number 4, recessed round-arched doorway with radial fanlight and panelled door. Number 6, modern shopfront. Former cottage at rear of Number 6. Later 18th century. 2 storeys. Double fronted with 2 windows. Hipped Welsh slate roof. Coursed Devonian limestone rubble. Openings with timber lintols. 2 and 3 light mullioned casement windows with glazing bars. Boarded door (citing M. Laithwaite).
