Full description

South West Heritage Trust, 1838-1848, Digitised Tithe Maps and Transcribed Apportionments (Cartographic). SDV359954.

'Bridge Cottage' is depicted on the North Bovey Tithe Map; 174 on the apportionment. Owned by the Earl of Devon, occupied by 'John Thomas as Brabant'. House with verandah is shown on the Tithe Map. Additional building sited at the north-eastern end (wall not shown).

Fairbrook Cottage. Late 19th century map shows the building (possibly altered since the early Tithe Map depiction), wall and adjoining structure to east-north-east.

Fairbrook Cottage.
Small house. Early 19th century. Rendered granite rubble walls with brick gable end stacks. Thatched roof with gable ends.
Plan of central stairhall with large heated room either side and smaller service rooms behind. Small room to the far left perhaps originally summerhouse, 20th century extensions at rear.
Two storeys. Symmetrical 3-window front with central door, small separate section to far left. First floor windows 2-light late 20th century casements originally horizontal sliding sashes (photograph 1950), roof raised in slight eyebrows above windows. Front door probably original panelled door top panels now glazed. Symmetrically placed either side are original French windows with marginal lights. Extending almost the whole length is a verandah with hipped slate roof supported on wooden posts, probably original. To far left is attached small two storey Gothick summerhouse with pointed arched doorway and similar window above, battlemented at the top, possibly re-using old materials.
Adjoining front of house to the right is tall granite rubble garden wall incorporating, next to the house, a re-used granite 4-centred arched doorway with roll mouldings and chamfered plinth. 20th century two storey extensions at rear.
Interior contains early-19th century staircase with turned newels and stick balusters. Arched recesses beside fireplaces. Panelled surrounds to French windows.
