Full description
Department of Environment, 1988, Langtree, 14 (List of Blds of Arch or Historic Interest). SDV14307.
House, formerly the rectory.
Circa 1830-40, but with some c18 fabric and later c19 addition. Plastered stone walls. Hipped slate roof.3 rendered brick stacks.
Plan: central block has entrance passage leading to stairhall with principal room to either side each of which has axial passage behind and service rooms or smaller rooms to the rear. In recessed section at either end is another sizeable room with service room behind and there is an apparently c18 range at the right-hand end extending to the rear. Another later c19 range runs parallel to the rear of the left-hand end. Exterior: 2 storeys. Symmetrical 1:3:1 window front of 3 bays with marginal glazed 20-pane sashes. French windows on ground floor to the left, that to the right is a similar sash window to the one above. Central 4-panel c19 door behind later c19 verendah which has chamfered posts and incorporates a conservatory at the left-hand end. A tall wall, partly castellated, extends from the right-hand end of the house. Recessed range set back from this end with leaded pane c18 or c19 casements. Taller parallel gable-ended range behind central and left-hand ranges. Original stair window with arched head visible at rear of central section.
Interior: room to left of entrance has decorative plaster cornice and ceiling band as does left-hand end room which also incorporates an early to mid c19 marble chimneypiece. Entrance passage and room to right have simple moulded cornices. The staircase has decorative wrought iron balusters, a mahogany wreathed handrail and carved tread ends. The right-hand end of the house contains several c18 2-panel doors, otherwise early c19 6-panel door prevail. This is a very complete and unspoilt example of a good quality early c19 vicarage.
