Summary

A large bank barn at the northern end of the farmstead with a cattle shelter on the ground floor and a corn barn above. The cattle shelter takes the form of an open-fronted linhay with a row of nine arched, dressed stone, entrances. The corn barn has a central threshing floor with opposing double doors. Behind the barn is a horse engine house.

Barn approx 12m to north of South Whilborough farmhouse. Circa early C19. Limestone rubble walls with dressed stone to doorways; gable ended tarred slate roof. Probably row of shippons on ground floor with independent access and storage above.2 storeys. Imposing facade which originally had 9 adjoining arched doorways with chamfered dressed stone jambs, some are now blocked. On first floor at centre is wide loading doorway with slit opening to either side. This building was built to be decorative as well as functional and presumably reflects an increasing prosperity in the farm complex.

A large bank barn which dominates the farmyard to the north of the farmhouse. The barn has a row of nine arched entrances on the ground floor, the arches made of dressed limestone. These were probably not doorways but rather built to form a type of open-fronted linhay to enable cattle to roam freely from the ground floor into the adjacent yard. Above is a corn barn with a central threshing floor flanked by large double doors on either side. The doors appear relatively modern but contemporary with the barn suggesting that it is later 19th century in date. It originally had a large pent roof that sheltered the doors on both sides but only that to the yard survives, supported on timber brackets. Another unusual feature of the barn and also the adjoining linhays is that the roof trusses are set at an angle to the two principal walls.
Behind the barn is a horse engine house. This was originally open-sided but is now infilled and the roof raised from its original height. The overhead beam for the engine is now missing. It is uncertain if it is contemporary with the barn, although the fact that the barn has a proper threshing floor suggests that it may be later.
