Bawden, M., Reply to Questionnaire from Dean Milles (Correspondence). SDV150675.

"The Soars. Is very high; at the east end whereof was formerly a beacon at the mouth of the river or rather sea, that runs to Salcombe."

In the Tithe Award the field has been subdivided into East Beacon and West Beacon. The eastern half incorporates a cliff edge hilltop at about 130m (citing Tithe Map).
