Summary

A shallow earthwork pit was visible on aerial photographs of 1966 on the south-west facing spur south-west of Tub Corner, Broadclyst. The pit is probably the remains of a former Marl Pit, as depicted on the Ordnance Survey first edition 25inch map.

A roughly circular shallow earthwork pit circa 25 metres in diameter was visible on aerial photographs of 1966 on the south-west facing spur south-west of Tub Corner, Broadclyst. The pit is probably the remains of a former Marl Pit, as depicted on the Ordnance Survey first edition 25inch map. The pit is also depicted on the Tithe Map for Broadclyst and therefore predates the 1840s.

A magnetometer survey conducted over approximately 18.6 hectares at Whimple has not identified any anomalies of definite archaeological interest. A curving ditch-type response of uncertain origin has been detected; it could relate to the nearby possible ring ditch recorded on Devon HER or have a natural explanation. Other linear trends of uncertain origin could be a result of drains or be a result of other agricultural or natural processes. Former field boundaries have been mapped, along with modern ploughing effects, a former marl pit, land drains, areas of natural magnetic variation and magnetic disturbance from nearby ferrous objects.

A discrete area of magnetic disturbance is visible in the northwest of Area 3, immediately adjacent to a modern electricity pylon. The disturbance corresponds with the location of a former marl pit that is visible on historic mapping of the site.
