Full description

Department of Environment, 19/03/1973, Bideford, 22 (List of Blds of Arch or Historic Interest). SDV341487.

Probably 17th century, altered, 2 storey and attic, gabled dormer, massive chimney.First floor sash window with exposed frame and glazing bars. Shop with wood case with enriched sculptured consoles.

House with shop. Early 19th century with mid 19th century shop front; possibly a remodelling of an earlier building. Solid rendered front. Slate roof. large rendered chimney to rear left of ridge. Two storeys with garret; 1-window range. Shop-front has 8-paned display window, canted on right towards a recessed, three-quarter-glazed door; flanking pilaster-strips and entablature, the cornice supported at either end by carved consoles carrying female heads. Upper-storey window has 8-paned sashes in recessed box-frames. Gabled dormer with 2-paned wood window. Interior not inspected.

Research suggests that burgage tenements of regular width and depth were laid out extending back from the southern frontage of this portion of the High Street, and were stepped up the hillside. They are presumably medieval in origin, although direct evidence of this has not been found.
