Name:Hut A in settlement 1180 metres south of North Hessary Tor

Summary

Hut circle with a simple plan and double orthostat walling. Internal diameter 8.0 metres. Wall 1.3 metres wide, 0.8 metres high. Doorway faces south-west, and is lined on both sides with slabs. Small compartment built against east-south-east inside wall measures 2.5 metres in diameter and is defined by rubble partition wall 1.5 metres wide, 0.3 metres high. This is probably represents a temporary shelter constructed during military training or tinworking.

One of a group of six 'Hut Circles' shown on 19th century map.

One of a group of nine hut circles.
(24/8/1950) Hut A (SX5770 7305). Diameter 8.0 metres, width of walls 2.0 metres, height 0.5 metres. Of double walled type, composed of large rocks and stones, which are turf-covered. Condition good; entrance to the south-western side.

Stone hut circle terraced into hillslope at SX5770 7306. Simple plan and double orthostat walling. Internal diameter 8.0 metres. Wall 1.3 metres wide, 0.8 metres high. Doorway faces south-west, and is lined on both sides with slabs. Small compartment built against east-south-east inside wall measures 2.5 metres in diameter and is defined by rubble partition wall 1.5 metres wide, 0.3 metres high. This is similar to one excavated at Site F, Holne Moor, and probably represents a temporary shelter constructed during military training or tinworking.

Butler's hut 1; one of the larger buildings, this has an internal wall.
One of twelve hut circles lie in an exposed position just below the Princetown Railway track. Partially explored by the Dartmoor Exploration Committee they had previously been much pulled about by stone cutters.
