Name:Hut I in settlement 1180 metres south of North Hessary Tor

Summary

Hut has an internal diameter of 4.3 metres. Wall 1.4 metres wide, 0.7 metres high. A small compartment built against north-west inside wall measures 2.0 metres by 1.8 metres and is defined by rubble partition wall 1.0 metres wide, 0.3 metres high. This is probably a post medieval temporary shelter constructed during military training or tin working.

Full description

Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division, 1950, SX57SE26, I (Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division Card). SDV225907.

One of a group of nine hut circles, south of the track of an old railway.
(24/8/1950) Hut I (SX5770 7304). Remains of a hut circle. Small and in ruinous condition diameter 4.0 metres, wall height 0.3 metres. Difficult to say whether it was originally double walled. Entrance appears to be on the south side.

Stone hut circle terraced into hillslope at SX57707304. Simple plan and single orthostat walling. Internal diameter 4.3 metres. Wall 1.4 metres wide, 0.7 metres high.
Small compartment built against north-west inside wall measures 2.0 metres by 1.8 metres and is defined by rubble partition wall 1.0 metres wide, 0.3 metres high. This is similar in character to one excavated at site F on Holne Moor, and is probably a post medieval temporary shelter constructed during military training or tin working (see Fleming, 1988).

Butler's hut 4. Twelve hut circles lie in an exposed position just below the Princetown Railway track. Partially explored by the Dartmoor Exploration Committee they had previously been much pulled about by stone cutters.
