Full description

Department of Environment, 1987, Bampton, 1 (List of Blds of Arch or Historic Interest). SDV54005.

Granary to the north west of Benshayes Farmhouse. Probably late C18/early C19. Timber frame with brick infill, whitewashed and plastered externally and supported on staddle stones; hipped slate roof. Square on plan with the doorway on the north side. An unusual survival in the region associated with a good farmyard group.

The granary is a typical example of this type of building which appears in Devon c.1800, comprising a light-weight structure supported on staddle stones. The granary at Benshayes has a timber frame infilled with brick which is rendered externally with a symmentrical hipped slate roof.
