Lantern on churchyard wall of church of st. John about 6m east of lynchgate. Lantern. Late c19. Wrought iron and glass on a granite plinth. The plinth is carved with the inscription "lighten our darkness we beseech thee o lord", and the initials j. N. G. And e. G. These are probably for james nutcombe gould (1849-1899) and edith gould (1859-1900), who are buried nearby. Above is the elaborate iron frame of the lantern, gothic in style with a cross on top. Lantern is 10-sided with a shaped top; 8 of the sides are glazed, the centre-pieces being of the bulls-eyes of crown-glass sheets. The lantern originally contained an oil lamp, but is now lit by electricity (doe).
