Summary

Small rectangular single ditched enclosure measuring 50m x 35m. Adjacent linear features (aph).

Ap suggests the presence of a rectilinear enclosure with an 'annexe' attached to its s side (both features having s-facing entrances), probably of prehistoric or roman date, visible as a cropmark c.230m e of stear's cottages (nmr citing miller).

A rectilinear ditched enclosure of probable later prehistoric date was visible as a cropmark circa 400 metres north of Stoke Canon, overlooking the Exe valley to the west and the Culm valley to the south-east.
The cropmark measures up to circa 4 metres across and defines a rectilinear enclosure approximately 50 metres long and 30 wide. An internal division can be seen as a cross ditch just over 12 metres from the southern edge. A break in both this and the southern end might be evidence for an original entrance. A further ditch is visible as a cropmark 4 metres north of the enclosure, and might be associated with it although its function is unclear.
Many of the aerial photographs consulted by the survey are copies of DAPs held by the Historic England Archive. In some cases these have been recorded as separate sources. This is because variations in the way the prints have been processed could result in images on which archaeological features are visible to a greater or lesser degree.
