A possibly ditch defined enclosure of possible late prehistoric or Roman date was visible on aerial photographs as fragmentary cropmarks on the west-facing slopes to the south of Columbjohn.
The possible enclosure was previously transcribed as roughly D-shaped and 50 by 70 metres in size. However, the linear cropmark that defined the eastern edge of the enclosure in this interpretation was more probably geological in origin. The cropmarks interpreted here include a further linear ditch to the east as evidence of a possible rectilinear enclosure or field boundaries circa 70 by 65 metres in size, with a possible narrow entrance towards the south-west corner. Large breaks in the visibility of the cropmarks might be caused by variations in the underlying geology.
