Full description

Gover, J. E. B. + Mawer, A. + Stenton, F. M., 1931, The Place-Names of Devon: Part One, 180 (Monograph). SDV1312.

Rexon. First appears in the assizes of 1249 as 'Ryggeston'. Possibly from 'hrycgstan' meaning ridge stone, but this does not seem apt for topography and no stone survives. The name is mentioned again in the assizes of 1386 as 'Reggeston' and in a document of 1505 as 'Rexton'.

Goodyear, R. I., 1990, Place Name (Worksheet). SDV219.
