A 'Chalk Pit' and an 'Old Chalk Pit' are labelled and illustrated on the First Edition 25 inch Ordnance Survey map, to the south of the road near South Combe Higher Barn. The site is labelled as an 'Old Chalk Pit' on the Second Edition 25 inch Ordnance Survey map. The layout of the old chalk pit coincides with that of a 'Coppice' within plot 115 on the Axmouth Tithe Map of 1842. The area is labelled as a 'Pit (disused)' on the Ordnance Survey Master Map.
