Lychgate to St. Michael's Church. Late 19th century. Rusticated grey limestone rubble with red sandstone dressings, slate roof, timber gable ends, iron gates. Gothic Revival. Rusticated grey limestone walls support an arched brace roof springing from a timber wall plate which projects beyond the walls on timber struts pierced with trefoils. The roof has crested ridge tiles, small gablets on either side of the ridge and timber Perpendicular traceried gable ends, the cusping below the tracery replaced with a straight piece of timber. A pair of good cast and wrought iron gates have fleur de lis finials above the dograil, a middle rail decorated with quartrefoils and cusped panels below the toprail with fleur de lis finials and larger wrought iron scrolled finials in the centre and to left and right. Smaller pedestrian gates to left and right of the lych gate are hung from castellated gate piers of a rather lighthearted design. The left and right gates are plainer than the centre gate but have twisted wrought iron finials. An impressive design with good ironwork. Date listed: 28th April 1987.
