Name: | Prehistoric Field System on South Common, North of Hooken Beach |
---|
Summary
A field system of probable prehistoric date is visible on aerial photographs and images derived from Lidar data as subtle earthwork banks and cropmarks of levelled earthwork banks on South Down Common, to the north of Hooken Beach, Beer. The western elements of the field system had previously been recorded as a possible enclosure.

A field system of probable prehistoric date is visible on aerial photographs and images derived from Lidar data as subtle earthwork banks and cropmarks of levelled earthwork banks on South Down Common, to the north of Hooken Beach, Beer. The field enclosures are rectangular in shape with the long axes aligned roughly perpendicular to the contours of the hill slopes, approximately NNW-SSE. The largest field enclosures are centred on circa SY 218882 and SY215882. The former fields are bifurcated into two roughly equal parts by a modern east to west oriented field boundary. To the north of this boundary the earthwork banks are visibly lower and more spread in appearance than to the south, presumably by modern agriculture. The rectangular fields are connected at their southern ends by a curvilinear earthwork bank from which can be seen extending additional perpendicular banks, probably further relict field boundaries. These cannot be seen as earthworks to the north of the modern boundary and have presumably been levelled beyond this point. It is possible elements of the field system were reused or incorporated into the post medieval or 19th century enclosure pattern, illustrated by the correspondence between the boundaries depicted on the Ordnance Survey first edition 25 inch map and the western end of the complex of relict earthwork banks. Significant areas of the former field pattern have clearly been lost to coastal erosion. It is very probable that these earthworks are part of the same field system recorded to the east as MDV19842. The easternmost field boundaries were previously recorded as a large rectilinear enclosure.
