Full description

Department of Environment, 1988, Ashton, 11 (List of Blds of Arch or Historic Interest). SDV284341.

Garden wall south west of Place Barton, parallel to Shippen Brook, returning as garden and farmyard wall parallel to the road south of Place Barton; footbridge over Shippen Brook west of Place Barton; small thatched building, possibly former privy, at the north end of the garden wall. The walling is probably C16 or C17 in origin, with some rebuilding on the section parallel to the road, bridge probably C19, privy probably late C19 or early C20. Plan: The garden and farmyard walls form the west and south west perimeters enclosing the buildings at Place Barton which was garrisoned in the C17 they may have had some defensive purpose as well as forming part of what seems to have been a double courtyard plan arrangement with the house in the north west corner of the site. The wall to the south west ends in a thatched single storey building with drainage into Shippen Brook : a single span bridge across the brook, west of the house gives pedestrian access from the house to the fields. Exterior: Tall stone rubble walls with some putlog holes; the south west wall shows signs of rebuilding and forms, the rear wall of a C19 farmbuilding; to the left this wall has a granite archway with a cambered arch flanked by 2 squat stone rubble gate piers, round on plan and set forward from the archway. The south-west wall, parallel to Shippen Brook extends to the house where it concludes in a small single storey thatched building adjacent to a probably C19 single span bridge with a segmental arch and stone rubble parapets. Group value with house at Place Barton and 3 other listed buildings on the site.
