Full description

Quinnell, N. V., 10/09/1995, Cairn (Worksheet). SDV350844.

Terminal cairn at the north-eastern end of Drizzlecombe Row Worth 19. Aligned almost on the centre of the row. 0.6-0.7 metres high with diameters of 8.5 by 9.0 metres. Its flattish top, about 5.0 metres across, has a central excavation pit, 2.5 - 3.0 metres wide and up to 0.6 metres deep. Upcast may have heightened the mound but there are no prominent spoil heaps. 17 fairly earth fast stones are visible around the cairn of which at least 4 may be displaced.

Surrounding the mound is a ring of 12 upright stones set 1.5m from its periphery. This type of cairn is described by Turner as encircled.

A notable feature of the cairn is that the remnants of the kerb lie between 1.0m and 1.4m beyond the perimeter of the mound.
