Brousentor is possibly from the old english 'beorg-tun' meaning by a hill or barrow. Brousentor is mentioned in various documents in the middle ages. In the lay subsidy rolls of 1340 there is documentation of a john de brouneston, which suggests that brouneston is a lost place from which the tor took its name. The farm is probably to be associated with john broun mentioned in the same subsidy roll, the meaning being thus 'brown's farm' (gover et al).
