Department of Environment, 1987, Bampton, 25 (List of Blds of Arch or Historic Interest). SDV54005.

The Castle on the east side of Castle Street in Bampton including the garden railings to garden to the left. House, formerly inn. 18th century or earlier with a late 18th or 19th century rear outshut. Colourwashed stone rubble with a slate roof, gabled at ends ; projecting left end stack, right end stack, axial stack, all with stone shafts.
Plan: Single depth with rear outshut which is probably an addition. The original range has probably 2 rooms to left and I room to right of carriageway of centre.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 7 window front with regular fenestration ; large carriage entrance with a timber lintel in the first 2 bays from the right. Fenestration of early 19th century 16-pane sashes ; 4 windows to the ground floor. The first floor left hand, second from left and fourth from left bays have blocked or false windows.
Interior: Not inspected but may contain features of interest including the possiblity of early roof trusses. An interior inspection might involve revising the suggested dating.
Early/mid 19th century garden railings to garden at left (northeast) with spearhead and vase finials are included in the listing.
