Two extractive pits, probably gravel pits of early 20th century date, were visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of 1946 at Mamhead Bottom, Ashcombe. The visible earthworks do not correspond with those depicted on the Second Edition Ordnance Survey 25inch map of 1904-1906 and are probably later extensions. An irregularly shaped mound circa 20 by 30 metres in size, immediately south of the larger of the two visible pits is interpreted as an associated spoil mound that overlies one of the earlier extractive features. The earthworks are obscured by dense plantation planting on more recent images available to the survey.
