Full description

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

'Rectory' shown on 19th century map as a group of buildings and garden plots mainly to the south and east of the later rectory.

'Rectory' shown on early 20th century map as an irregualr shaped building with a rectangular earthwork to the south and a farmstead to the south-east.

Mardon house. Built as a rectory in 1902, on or near the site of its dilapidated predecessor. A modern interpretation of a Tudor country house. Random granite cavity walls with a brickwork inner skin; dressed granite mullions and door/window surrounds; rusticated quoin blocks. Yellow South Devon roof slates. Stables and outbuildings of granite with red brickwork and slated roofs. Four servants' bedrooms on attic floor, two nurseries, 18 fireplaces, back and front stairs. Adjoining parish room is now a garage. Ceased to be a rectory and became a private house in 1933.
