HER Number:MDV4232
Name:Parish Boundary on Ugborough Moor

Summary

Continuation of the parish boundary marked by a succession of stones. Has not received much attention by writers on the subject. Only a few of the stones are obviously the 1803 erection mentioned by J. Andrews of traine and reported by worth, and it seems fairly certain that the numerous uncut or rough stones of various sizes and shapes are older boundary marks between manorial estates, only later adopted as the parish bounds. There are between 20 and 30 stones between the longstone (sx65446074) and the clay works disturbance at left lake, only two being inscribed 'h'-'u' although others are the same height and are cut. There are seven stones to the n of left lake, including the 'u'-stone at Drylake (SX 6453 6385), before Stony Bottom, Hook Lake is reached.
