Summary

Cropmark ditches of superimposed rectilinear enclosures of potential late prehistoric or Roman date are visible on aerial photographs taken in 1985, to the southeast of Hookway, Crediton Hamlets.

Vis=9/12/1991 (robinson) site lies on level ridge top, with a steep fall to the n and fairly steep fall to s. No visible earthworks (dprfp).

At least three superimposed single ditched rectangular or rectilinear enclosures. Double linear mark c 130m long crossing largest e-w. Recorded from the air by f. Griffith in 1985. Largest enclosure c 60m by 60m, smallest c 30m by 30m (ap).

Rapid examination of ap suggests the presence of an enclosed settlement of prehistoric or roman date, visible as cropmarks of a large rectilinear enclosure (c.48m x 60m) with a smaller rectilinear enclosure (c.30m x 40m) in its se corner (within this smaller enclosure is a linear feature). These cropmarks are visible c.650m ene of rudge (nmr citing miller).

A rectilinear enclosure 54m x 65m with a smaller (36m x 36m) enclosure within it are visible as cropmark ditches on aerial photographs (p1-2). A further length of ditch is visible within the smaller enclosure. The features were digitally plotted as part of the National Mapping Programme.
