Mollycombe was mentioned as 'Smalacombe' in 1619.
Hooke, D., 1990, Studies on Devon Charter Boundaries, 195 (Article in Serial). SDV140514.
The southern boundary of Thurlestone parish runs into the sea at 'Mollycombe'. Recorded as 'Smalacombe' in 1619 and 'Smalan Cumb' in the South Hams charter of AD847.

The South Milton/Thurlestone Parish boundary follows the valley which meets the sea at Leas Foot Sand. The medieval boundaries probably indicate the importance for the parishes of having access to the sea or sand.
