Full description

Pye, A.R., 1989, Berry Head Fort, Brixham. An Archaeological Assessment, 9, 35 (Report - Assessment). SDV362497.

The field train shed was for artillery wagons. It was designed in 1794 and built soon after 1805. Marked as such on a plan of 1811. Its foundations survive.

Pye, A.R. & Slater, W.D., 1990, Berry Head Fort, Brixham, An Archaeological Survey, 5, 7, 21, Fig. 19, Pl. 23 (Report - Survey). SDV362493.

Field train shed, designed by Mercer in 1794, but not approved for construction until late 1805 and completed in 1807. The 1794 design envisaged a building 50 feet long by 15 feet wide by 10 feet 6 inches high, with all walls of timber on stone footings. As built, all walls were of stone. The building remained open to the north, consisting of a series of bays subdivided by timber posts set in socketed stone blocks; several survive, not necessarily in-situ, and possess sockets measuring an average 8-10 centimetres. The building survives only as only partially visible limestone rubble footings.
