Having been given notice to quit from the Duke Street Assembly Rooms in 1878, substitute premises had to be found. A small chapel built by the Bible Christians in 1867 was purchased and fitted out, and the first council meeting was held on 3 July 1878. However in 1885 cracks began to appear in the east and west walls and remedial work was required, including rebuilding the east wall with buttresses. In 1902 the chapel was sold to the Primitive Methodists, who continued to use it until 1932. The building was demolished in the late 20th century.
