Foss Street was fitted with a drawbridge to allow traffic to cross the dock entry, now Flavel Street, which was filled in about 1828-9 when the Market House was built.

At the beginning of the 13th century an earth dam called 'La Fosse' was constructed to create a tidal reservoir, with the mill gullet or sluice at the centre. In the early 19th century it was crossed by a drawbridge. The gullet was finally filled in 1831.
