Site visit 23/04/1992. Possible pillow mound situated about 45 metres east of tower on south east edge of a cliff-top hill. An elongated mound circa 20 metres long by circa 10 metres wide and up to about 0.3 metres high, although height appears increased on south and east by natural scarp. Under pasture but clearly very stoney. The area is known as The Warren and the tower may originally have been a warrener's house.

An oval earthwork is visible on The Warren, Hartland, on aerial photographs of the 1940s onwards. The earthwork, which measures approximately 18 metres by 11 metres at is widest point, could be the remains of a pillow mound of medieval or post-medieval date. Alternatively, the earthwork could be the remains of a barrow or burial mound of Bronze Age date, which perhaps was reused as a pillow mound in later periods. Although not clearly visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of 1999, Environment Agency Lidar revealed that this feature survives as an earthwork in 2007.
