Great torrington station was already extant when the marland-torrington narrow gauge railway (ss51sw/40) was started. The railway from bideford was closed and the station house ceased to be occupied in 1982 (timms).

Passenger traffic ceased in 1965 but freight traffic continued into the 1980s. Ici fertilisers built a warehouse on the site of the goods yard. Following complete closure the track was lifted and now forms part of the recreational tarka rail. The station was auctioned and opened in 1984 as the puffing billy restaurant (ea).
